How to Commit Seppuku with a Fan #Shorts
Published at : September 09, 2022
Seppuku refers to the honorable way of death in which a samurai cuts open his own stomach with a sword. But did you know that during the Edo period (1603-1868), samurai committed seppuku with fans and wooden swords? Can you really cut your stomach with those?!
The Edo period was a time of more than 200 years of peace, and the samurai did not know war. So even if they were ordered to commit seppuku, many of them didn’t know how to or didn’t have the courage.
Then how can you die? The answer is, by the Kaishakunin’s katana.
A Kaishakunin was originallya person who cut off the head of the samurai who had committed seppuku, so he would suffer as little as possible.
But most people couldn’t cut their stomachs, so they had their heads cut off immediately after touching the fan or wooden sword. So seppuku had become just a token ritual.
