Why should I learn Odissi?
It helps in the overall development of the student’s :
A. SWASTHYA : as there are rigorous body conditioning exercises and postures which are extracted directly from the ancient Bharatiya scripture of Dance and Drama, The Natya Shastra. Hence, they accomplish physical fitness and grace.
B. KALA : having acquired various SKILLS / TALENTS like, Angik Abhinay (body movements), Vacik Abhinay (Speech expression), Aharya Abhinay (Costume expression), Satvik Abhinay (facial Expression through Mental Sadhana) helps to become an independent stage artist.
C. SANVEDANSHEELTA (MENTAL SERENITY) : Having trained to remain calm in provoking / challenging situations, and remaining focused in the present, one learns to communicate sensitively towards others feelings, needs.
D. VIVEK (LEADERSHIP QUALITIES DEVELOPMENT) : As the course is not simply learning dance, there will be also theory classes imparting the Bhagvat wisdom, which helps the student make wise decisions having developed a sound power of discrimination.
E. ADHYATMA (SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT) : The student learns to represent the glorious Culture of bhakti, through the dance meant for the pleasure of Lord Jagannath.
Course Description : (10 modules)
The student will be taught to be an independent dancer.
The student will be promoted through 10 modules.
First module (Prathama) comprises of 50 sessions covered in a span of 6 months.
The duration of various modules alters according to the portion.
The entire course comprises of the following traditional subjects:
1. Postures and movements extracted from the most ancient scripture of dance, The Natyashastra – Karan, Asan, Hastamudra, Padabhed, Dristibhed, Grivabhed, Shirobhed, Gatibhed, Charis, Bhramaris, Belis and many more.
2. Steppings – 20 basic steps of Chowka and Tribhanga
3. Odissi Dance Repertoire ( Dance on various devotional as well as classical songs like jayadev goswami’s Geeta Govinda, Odiya Abhinays, Vaishnav Bhajans by our Vaishnav Acharyas,etc.)
4. History and philosophy which connects the artist to the glorious Art form.
1 Hour session will comprise of :
15 mins - warm up exercises.
20 mins – Steppings
20 mins – steps of the dance routine
What does one achieve after 1st Module :
1) The student learns the basic postures and steps of the dance form.
2) The warm-up and body conditioning exercises shall be taught to improve the core strength of the student.
3) The student is introduced to the Indian culture and the roots of classical dance forms of India like Odissi.
4) Online certificates shall be awarded at the end of each module.
