3 of 3: Swartz Passive Firing Pin Safety issues and resolutions.
Published at : November 16, 2021
Here is some further explanation of how this system works and what goes wrong with it, with a little discussion about how the issues might be resolved. I'm presenting this as "theoretical" and am definitely not offering this as a service, but I wish someone would. Some young gunsmith wanting to get his name out there could get this down almost to a paint-by-number process and make a little money while helping people out.
At the end of the vid there are a couple clips of "will a 1911 really fire if dropped on the muzzle?" Unfortunately the answer is yes, in the absence of a passive firing pin safety (PFPS). So, there are some pluses to having a PFPS as long as the gun will still fire when called upon. Some of the other measures used-- the Series 80 system, or using a titanium firing pin and extra-strong firing pin spring-- do the job but are not without their own downsides.
Actual cases of "I dropped my 1911 and it fired" are thankfully rare. I've heard plenty of comments like, "just don't be stupid and careless, don't drop guns", and, "I've never dropped a gun in my life, what's the big deal." If you never have, good, and I hope you never do, but we're only human and.... it does happen.
It will be "most evident" that I am not an expert videographer nor a polished narrator..... apologies.... just a guy trying to get some info out. Thanks are due though, for the editing, to "The Big V".
