Screening for vision
Published at : September 18, 2021
Greetings!
Let us introduce the details of observing the visual skills of a child. Make her sit on a chair or on a person's lap. You can offer a few toys for her to play with. The person who will be screening her for vision has to be seated in front of her. You need to use an object which is not too big. We have used a small bead to observe the visual orientation.
Hold or hang a bead at a child's eye level. First, place it at a distance of 25cm away from her eyes. Then, move it towards her. Observe if she is able to focus the object when held at a distance from her as well as near to her. She may try to reach out to hold the object in a playful manner or she would track the movement of object. A sure sign of her sightedness.
Observe if the child is able to track moving objects in all directions. The object should be made to move within a child's visual field. This will help the child to see the moving object b movement of her eyes and not by moving her head.
Sit in front of the child and hold the object at her eye level. From the center, move in the right direction and then bring it back to the center and move it towards left. Make sure that the object does not move beyond her shoulder level so that it stays within her visual field.
Next, observe visual tracking in upward and downward directions. Holding the bead in front of her at the eye level, move it from the center towards upward direction, bring it back to the center and move it in the downward direction. You can move it upwards till the head level and downwards till the mid chest level, so that the object stays within her visual field.
Thank you
