The lesson begins with the chord shapes needed to play this song: A, D, E. These are among the easiest chords to play on guitar. We practice switching from A to D, and then we practice switching from A to E, because those are the two switches that we'll need to be able to make smooth, in order to play this song.
Next we play through the entire chord progression using downstrokes only so we can focus on those switches, while keeping the rhythm very simple.
Once we have the chord shapes comfortable, we can learn the strumming pattern. I have two options: First, I have a very easy strumming pattern for Walk The Line, where we play a downstroke, and then a down up, and we just do that over and over again. We break it down, count it out, practice it.
Then I have another option. This is the classic boom-chuck country folk strumming pattern, and it does require a little more finesse. We talk about which bass note you need to pluck, depending on the chord shape. And this is great to work on, even if you're a beginner, because if you enjoy this style you will run across this strumming pattern in tons of popular country songs and folk songs alike.
Finally, we put the chords and strumming together, and we play through the song, nice and slow. And that's it!
Enjoy!
